Stonewater Stream

Today happens to be Ascension Day, which means it marks the 40th day after Jesus’ resurrection (and 10 days before Pentecost), when His disciples saw Him ascend into heaven.  It’s simply a reminder of how powerful our Lord is!

In Luke 22:69 Jesus said, “But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” Then in Luke 24:51 it says, “While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.” That must’ve been amazing to see Jesus fly up into the sky like Superman! I imagine it will be equally amazing to see Him return the same way.  (Acts 1:11)

Last Saturday, Tom asked us to think on the Lord with all our heart, and to meditate on His attributes. I’m including a list of fifteen names for God to aid in this practice.  Please feel free to send me any additions; perhaps we will post our list on the bulletin board.

I’m also attaching a pdf of a list I made of who God is to me while I was just meditating on the Lord one day in prayer. You probably have your own – just thought it’d be fun to share.

Also, we are now working on memorizing Philippians 2:3-10. Please feel free to join us in the challenge to meditate on the word of God. 🙂

We are looking forward to welcoming special guests Miguel & Rosa  to share with us this Saturday evening 5/27 at 6 PM – hope you can join us!!

Names & Attributes of God

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

ELOHIM: GOD CREATOR

Elohim created (used 3x in Genesis 1) the elements on Day One (Genesis 1:2), animal life on Day Five (1:21), and human life with and eternal spirit in the image of God, on Day Six (1:27). In Christ we have a new birth (John 3:8), and new mind (1 Corinthians 2:16) and new works to walk in by obeying His commands (Ephesians 2:10).

EL ELYON: GOD MOST HIGH

He is the ultimate Ruler (Sovereign) over the earth and universe (Genesis 14:18-22). Abraham authenticated El Elyon as the true God when he gave tithes to God through Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem (Jerusalem).

ADONAI: LORD, OWNER, or MASTER

(Genesis 15:2) As we obey our King we are a wise builder (Matthew 7:24). Christ framed our following Him as an authority or leadership issue. He was announcing terms of surrender to each individual. (Luke 18:18-30; John 3:1-16, 4:7-11).

YAHWEH: GOD ALWAYS WAS, IS and WILL BE

This name also means that He is SELF-EXISTENT or not a created being (Exodus 3:14, John 8:58). This is the “to be” verb in Hebrew revealing that God is eternal. He never had a beginning and will never have an end.

YAHWEH JIREH: GOD OUR PROVIDER

(Genesis 22:14) God has, is and will provide our basic needs. It is God’s nature to be a provider (Philippians 4:19)

EL SHADDAI: GOD ALMIGHTY

Genesis 49:24-25 God, all powerful, figuratively stretches out His mighty arm to accomplish His purposes through us. (1 Kings 8:42).

YAHWEH-RAPHA: GOD WHO HEALS

(Exodus 15:22ff) Spiritual healing was accomplished on the cross for the purpose that we would live for righteousness (Isaiah 53:5, 1; Peter 2:24).  We expect a yes, but will accept a no, or a wait awhile sometimes without losing faith, because we trust that God is good, and is working all things for our good. (Romans 8:28)

YAHWEH-NISSI: GOD OUR BANNER

God, our seal of victory marches before us to advance His Kingdom purposes. We will be victors in Him as we follow His lead (Exodus 17:8)!

YAHWEH-SHAMMAH: GOD WHO IS THERE

His presence brings us boldness and strong confidence as we further His purposes. (Exodus 33:12-23, Ezekiel 48:35; Matthew 28:20)

YAHWEH- M’KADDESH: GOD IS HOLY

(Leviticus 11:44) The root word for holiness means “set apart” or “sanctified.” God is Holy because ALL HI attributes are perfect. The Spirit works in us to progressively make us holy (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

WE do our part by incrementally obeying His commands (1 Peter 1:14-15). The result is that we become more Christ-like (Galatians 4:19).

YAHWEH-SHALOM: GOD OUR PEACE

Peace means cessation from hostility between God and man, between nations and between one person with another. (Judges 6:24, Romans 5:1, Romans 14:19)

YAHWEH-ROHI: GOD OUR SHEPHERD

He directs, protects and provides for us so that we will promote His name (Psalm 23; John 10:11-18)

YAHWEH-TSIDKENU: GOD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

(Jeremiah 23:6) He declares us righteous in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21) and we progressively practice righteousness, demonstrating we are born of Him (1 John 2:29).

EL ROI: GOD WHO SEES

(Genesis 16:11-14) We are the objects of His gracious attention as He observes our thoughts and actions (Psalm 138:7-12). This name is the basis of the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). The fear of the Lord is living with the daily consciousness that He is always observing us. Knowing this is also comforting.

YAHWEH-SABAOTH: GOD OF HOSTS

The Host are God’s angelic armies. Sometimes He uses His angels to fulfill His purposes (1 Samuel 1:3). Call on Him in times of great challenges. (Malachi 1:1
